5 Keys to Immune Health Through the Winter

The winter months can be a challenging time of year for our immune system. Our schedules are busier, the temperatures are lower, and the air is dryer– so we’re much more likely to catch the common cold, flu, and other illnesses. It’s important to have a healthy immune system on our side during these vulnerable months– so we can kick the cold quickly, feel well through the holiday season, and be able to experience all of the things we love about this time of year. Don’t sit back and wait to get sick! Use these 5 tips to boost your immune system this winter. KEEP IT MOVING Colder weather means fewer outdoor activities, less walks with the kids/pups, and an overall less movement. But one key way to keep your immune system healthy– is to keep it moving! Continue to find ways to exercise. Follow a you tube workout or movement class, try out some indoor yoga, or visit your local gym. When our bodies get still, our circulatory system moves slower, and this makes it more difficult for your body to fight invaders when they come knocking at your door.

EAT A BALANCED DIET

We know, we know- holidays are our favorite time to splurge on all of the yummy comfort foods we love! And splurge you should, in moderation. A little sugar is good for the soul, but too much can wreak havoc on our immune system, making it weaker and less able to fight off infection. Remember to incorporate lots of veggies this winter, a warm healthy soup, and plenty of lean protein. And keep up with your vitamins! Since we often are veering away from our normal eating habits through the holidays– be sure to supplement with things like B vitamins, Vitamin D, and Zinc. Since we are staying inside more, with the windows shut, and the heat kicked up– many of us often experience a vitamin D deficiency through the winter.

MANAGE STRESS High cortisol levels are one of the biggest bullies of our immune system. When we’re chronically stressed, our body is in fight or flight, and our immune system suffers. It’s not easy and there’s no one piece of advice we can give to help you reduce stress. But overall, be mindful. Try to take time to decompress and let your body relax, go get a good massage (wink wink), and make time for things that bring you into a state of balance and make you feel at peace.

SOURCE YOUR NATURAL REMEDIES LOCALLY There’s a ton of medicine on the market that claims to zap your cold fast, and many OTC medicines can help alleviate many of the symptoms we face with things like the cold and flu. But when it comes to being proactive about your health rather than reactive, try some local and natural remedies this winter.

For example, locally sourced Elderberry syrup is absolutely fantastic for helping you build up your immune response. It’s jam packed with antioxidants and vitamins A, B, and C; and it’ll work with your body in a more harmonious way. Try Mayernik's elderberry syrup– it’s made right here in New Jersey! Fire cider is another brilliant tonic to use during the winter months, combining the power of horseradish, ginger, garlic, onions, and hot pepper with apple cider vinegar. Don’t knock it until you try it– it’s a powerhouse cocktail for keeping you healthy and happy through the holidays. Weathertop Farms makes a great one! GET PLENTY OF SLEEP

Lastly, please continue to get good rest! Sleep deprivation is the #1 weakener of our immune system– and we need that time for our bodies to replenish and repair. Like we mentioned before, busy schedules can make us feel quite scattered, and you are definitely not alone in that. Create an evening routine that supports you in falling asleep with ease, try white or pink noise while you sleep, and aim for 7-9 hours each night. Your body will thank you! Stay healthy, friends!
