Massage For Stress Relief

Updated: Oct 17, 2019

Finding it difficult to relax?

Do you suffer from anxiety or depression?

Want to feel better?

When many of us think about massage, we often think of it as a vacation activity, or a luxury. In realty, massage is an effective way to relax and unwind from a busy week or an emotional event, but few individuals incorporate it into their overall general wellness.

Yes, massage provides numerous physical benefits, but it also helps us to reduce our stress. As a matter of fact, many of the physical ailments that we feel can very likely be due to our high level of stress, anxiety or depression.

According to WebMD, constant stress without relief ultimately becomes "distress", which is a negative reaction to stress that can ultimately lead to headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain or trouble sleeping. Constant stress can also affect behavior and cause rapid mood changes, such as angry outbursts, social withdrawal, anxiety/depression, irritability, restlessness, and lack of motivation or focus.

The American Psychological Association describes a list of stress symptoms, and

generally all of them can be alleviated through massage. Massage increases the production of endorphins (the body's natural "feel good" chemical), and releases serotonin and dopamine. With the assistance of these chemicals, relief and relaxation overcomes any feelings of stress. Clinical studies have shown that even after one 30-minute massage session, clients can instantly feel physical, mental and emotional relief from their stress and other associated ailments.

With so many obligations, and often taking on more than we can handle, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find balance - to live a balanced life, in which our self-care is equally (if not more) important. Taking care of our mind and body, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle should be our top priority. When we are feeling our best, we are able to perform at our best.

Although massage may feel indulgent, it is an indulgence that is genuinely healthy for our physical and mental wellbeing. Furthermore, it allows us to feel little guilt, unlike other guilty pleasures in our life. We deserve to treat ourselves well, and we should allow massage to spoil us regularly!
